Move Closer/Tighten Frame for Maximum Impact

Well we're back with another addition of Photo Tips and this week's tip is one that will make a huge difference in your photography. How often have you looked at scenic pictures that attempt to include everything and end up looking like a vast canvas of nothing. Or how about a group of people stuck in the middle of a shot and a whole lot of empty space around them. The result in both cases are images that lack IMPACT! The remedy? Move in closer or zoom that lens in tighter. Remove unneeded space from your pictures and you'll see things pop dramatically. I can't stress enough how important this is. When outside and you come across one of those incredible landscapes that just takes your breath away, instead of trying to capture the entire scene with what surely will be disappointing results, zoom in to what you think is the most intriguing aspect in front of you and fire away. Then try a different area and see what happens. Some call this the intimate landscape. Whatever you call it, it tends to breathe more life into your images. When shooting people, again move or zoom in and expressions and feelings will be more readily captured. I've noticed with the advent of cell phone cameras that cropping is generally tighter especially with self portrait's since one can only extend one's arm so far. Move in, zoom in and take your photography to another level. T'il next time...keep shooting.
