Photography should always be on your terms.

I worked in the wonderful but sometimes volatile and fickle radio business for over 30 years. It was once said to me…"always on your terms eh Ray? to which I replied…"YES, ALWAYS". I could have added, if not on my terms then whose? Yes there is always a need to bend and be a team player when working for a business but I've never seen a reason to break. Ever! No matter where you are in life, family, friends and business acquaintances will often serve up unsolicited advise on how you should do this or that a certain way. People tend to want to try to change others. Hey, that's life, but in the art world it is deadly. If you want to kill creativity and dampen spirit, enthusiasm and confidence just try to change an artists vision of the world. Like all people in the artistic world photographers need to be true to themselves and always follow whatever it is that drives them to do what they do. There can be no compromise otherwise they are not fulfilling their vision. Those photographers not working on specific client contracts simply cannot afford to worry about what others think of their work. If we are worried what others think we will never unleash our true passion and thus never really be true to ourselves. Indeed, it will never be on our terms.
